To all European Union member countries, as well as to Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, the Republic of Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Andorra the Hungarian citizens are permitted to enter with a valid identity card as well.
To these countries does not need a passport for entry, for the older and young citizens a valid identity card is enough, regardless of its format (plastic card, booklet).
You can save time and money when travelling abroad you use your identity card. You can avoid the passport applying administration procedure and you can save the cost of the procedure.
From June 2009 minors under the age of 14 may also have identity cards, so they can travel to many countries in Europe avoiding the extra burden of passport application. Another advantage is that till 14 years of age the application for an identity card is free of charge.
We recommend that before going abroad you gather thoroughly information about travel documents and administrative procedures relating to the application for documents. We draw your attention to begin the necessary formalities in time, as in the summer months a number of document service centres have administrative pause and they do not receive clients, so at the Central Document Service Centre operated by the Central Office for Administrative and Electronic Public Services major client traffic can be expected during this period.
